ROAD BOARDS.

. ANAMA. The Anama Road Board met at Hek j eao this week. There were present:— ! Messrs D. Duff, D. J. Morrow, G. W. Richardson,. The clerk took the chair and read a letter from the returning officer advising the re-election of the members above named and Mr D. G. Wright. Mr Donald Duff was unanimously reelected chairman. Mr Duff thanked the board for the honour done him. He said he had no great desire to hold the office with the | lost time and responsibility attached jto it. They had worked harmoniously j in the past for the general good of the ' district, and he had no doubt they would do the same in the future. A ballot for two members to retire at the end of the year was taken., the lots falling to Messrs Richardson and Wright.. I Before proceeding to business, the chairman proposed a motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr Alexander Harvey, an old and much respected resident of the district and a> useful member of the board for nine years previous to retiring to live in Ashburton. The motion was seconded by Mr Morrow and carried, members standing.

A resolution congratulating the Hon. W. Nosworthy on his appointment as Minister of Finance was also adopted. The following alterations on the roll were authorised: T. A. Rainey to C. J. Peter, pt res. 2367; estate late R. C. Gillies, Montalto, to C. W. Gillies, as occupier; Geo. Murdoch to Wall and Smith, as Trustees for N. E. Murdoch, lot 4, D.P. 4180 s H. F. S. Drewill to Trustees of late N. G. Lyon, Shepherd's Bush Estate. The matter of cleaning a drain on the Lower Downs Road was left to the chairman to endeavour to arrange.

It was resolved to raise the level of a ford at the north end of the same road.

The clerk was instructed to call the attention of the controlling board to a broken pipe culvert on Boundary Road below Mr White's.

The clerk stated that plans and specifications for shingling Coskerie's Road would be prepared shortly, but it would not be advisable to put teams on during the winter frosts and rain. Accounts amounting to £92 5s were passed. The clerk reported that the day men had been engaged on repairs on the road and cuttings through the Downs, but would be leaving at once to execute repairs in various places between Anama Railway Station and Ruapuna. Improvements would be effected at several of the river fords when the water had receded sufficiently. COLDSTREAM.

The Coldstream Road Board met this week. Those present were: Messrs W. McKeage, J. Brown, J. Campbell, J. Dell and C. Gilliand. Mr W. McKeage was re-elected chairman. The County Council wrote asking what quantity of poisoned grain would be required. It notified that 8d per dozen would be paid for heads of small birds. An order for four sets of pipes for the Main South Road to Ealing was received. The Commissioner of Crowni Lands wrote asking for particulars of unpaid rates on several properties in the district.

The Hinds Oddfellows' Lodge stated that Mr D. T. Paterson's name should j be put on the valuation roll in respect i of its property. A letter was received from Mr J. T. Gallagher asking that the race on Jackson's Road be piped and the road put in repair. It was decided that in future any small repairs to Hinds River Crossing be left in Mr Dell's hands. The Hinds Football Club wrote asking for financial assistance. —The clerk was instructed to reply that the board considered this is a matter for the general public to subscribe to. The clerk was instructed to call the attention of the Longbeach Road Board to the state of part of Boundary Road and Windermere Road. It was resolved to strike a general rate of five-sixteenths of a penny m the pound for the ensuing year. In the ballot for first two retiring members Messrs Brown and Gilhand were drawn. . The attention of owners is to be called to encroaching gorse, with an intimation that legal action will be taken unless this is immediately attended to. _, Accounts amounting to £ol ys la were passed for payment.

MOUNT SQMERS. The Mount Somers Road Board held its monthly meeting on Monday. I here was present: Messrs M. C. Harper (chairman) Thos Bright, Jas R. Lockhard, J. W. Comyns, and E. J. Waush On the motion of Messrs Comyns and Lockhard, Mr Harper was unanimously re-appointed chairman. The chairman thanked the members tor their continued confidence. Before commencing the ordinary business, the chairman proposed votes of sympathy with the families of the late'Prime Minister and of the late Mr John Hood, These were carried unanimously, members standing. The residents of Patton's Koad, Mount Somers, wrote complaining of the bad state of the road, and asking for improvement. The letter was re- \ It was decided to grant the assistance asked by Messrs Carney and Wilson to cut a fresh water channel : through Mrs Wilson's property at Alford Forest. ~ The County Council notified that it had decided to pay 8d per dozen for birds' heads during the coming season. Mr Tbos. Stevenson was granted permission to erect a telephone wire from his residence to connect with the main wire on main highway, on the usual conditions. _ The overseer was authorised to pipe the creek crossing the Reserve Road at Alford Forest. Mr Comyns gave notice that at the next meeting he would move that a rate of one-halfpenny in the pound be struck on the capital value of all rateable property. . Accounts amounting to £7B 2s 4d were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
