THE WHAREKURI TRAGEDY.
NO FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS. (Per Press Association.) OAMARU, April 30. No developments have taken place in regard to the Wharekuri tragedy. The police are still searching for Philip Hudson, but no trace of him has been found. There is a possibility that if he is in the fast-running Waitaki River, his body may never be recovered. On several occasions previously persons who have been drowned in that river have never been seen again. The report from Waimate that a young man with scratches on his face had called at a house and asked for food, and that this man might have been Hudson, is not regarded seriously. The police do not think it could be Hudson, as it is most unlikely he would say where he came from. "Further the clothes worn by the Waimate man do not correspond with those worn by Hudson. However, the police have followed this and other supposed clues, and do not appear to have got any further forward.
Should Hudson not be found, dead or alive, in a few days, the inquest on Olive Rutherford will be resumed. Meantime the reasons which prompted the tragedy are wrapped in mystery. |
