RUGBY FOOTBALL

CLUES’ ANNUAL MEETINGS,

ELECTION OF OFFICERS

Several Rugby Football Clubs held their annual meetings last night.

The Ashburton Club

At the annual meeting of the Ashburton Football Club there was a fair attendance. Mr AY. U. fiillier (president) presided. The annual report congratulated the members on the success attained during the last season. The seniors were successful in winning the banner, a success thoroughly deserved, as it was solely due to the individual efforts of the members that they were able to win. It was with regret that the club was compelled to withdraw from the third grade competition half-way through the season, a step rendered necessary through members leaving the district. A special effort to gather in young players this season was advocated. Again the club had been well represented in senior and junior representative fixtures, all players fully justifying their inclusion. The hope was expressed that this' season there would be even more representative players from the club. A team had been sent to Christchurch at Easter, and had defeated the Sydenham senior combination. Home matches were played against Temuka and the Sydenham third grades, the visitors in each case defeating the club’s teams. At the opening of the year the credit balance was £4 Is, and the assets amounted to £5. Thanks to donations and subscriptions, they would be able to commence the present year with a balance of £o 10s. The expenses of running the club were heavy, it being found necessary to send cars out into the country to pick up members who happened to be engaged there, and to take thorn back. This expense would have been heavier had not several supporters come to the rescue with cars. The report urged all members to pay thoir subscriptions promptly, and thus enable the club to pay its dues at the start of the season. The medal presented by JMr W. Green for the most improved player was won by R. Tait. Votes of thanks wore recorded to those who had assisted the club in any way. The balance-sheet, which was considered highly satisfactory, was, with the report, adopted. The chairman congratulated the club upon its successful year and its satisfactory balance-sheet. He urged members to support their captain, as they had done in the past. Members had played the game a,s it should be played, and had acted the man. He had just concluded his seventeenth year as president, and he thanked members for their loyal support. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Hon. W. Nosworthy; president, Mr W. G. Old Boys’ Club.

At the annual meeting of the Ashburton Old Boys’ Football Club, held last evening, Mr H. M. Scott presided , over an attendance of 42 members and intending members. The annual report said the season 1924 could be termed one of the club’s most successful, especially in regard to the keenness of playing members. Three teams were entered in the competitions. The senior team possessed playing ability capable of considerable deveksoment. The lack of good pi ay era in the back division of the second grade team was responsible for its not having distinguished itself. The third grade team wen the seven-as-side tournament. Matches in all grades against Timaru would be negotiated at the commencement of the season. The following gained representative honours:—For Canterbury, N. Robilliard; South SubUnions and Country: N. Robilliard and I H. M. Scott; county senior: N. Robilliard. H. M. Scott, J. Robilliard, J. B. Nicoll, A. McClymont, and L. B. Galbraith ; countv senior B.: A. Buckingham, 0. Fricdlander, and C. use of tho gymnasium. The question of providing uniform badges and jerseys was left in the hands of tho management committee It was agreed to support the liugby Union in its movement to retain the Saturdny half-holiday.

Allanton. Thirteen members attended the annual meeting of tire Alientou Football Club. The President, Mr A. Lane, presided. The chairman complimented the club upon the good showing last season. The secretary gave a resume of last season’s operations. / It was unfortunate that the third grade team had had i to withdraw from the competition, due : mainly to players not turning out coni sistently. There was a small debit bal- ! ance, caused through some subscriptions not having been paid. The club had consequently had to struggle along as best it could. Matters appeared to have drifted, and' some older and levelheaded managers were required. The resignation of the secretary (Mr G. L. Knox) was accepted. The following officers were elected:— Patron, Mr A. Lane; president, Mr R. Houston; .vice-presidents, Messrs If. Partridge, A. Walker, W. Walker, H. L. Barker, R. Lynn, A. Barnett, A. A. Fooks, W. Tucker, A. Dobson, J. Templeton, W. Ingram, H. Cox, T. Welsh, S. Knox, H. Childs; delegate to Rugby Union, Mr J. Smith; vice-president of Rugby Union, Mr A. A. h ooks; general committee, Messrs E. Olds, A. Cox, A. Argyle, G. Terris, R. Childs ; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. Cox; club captain, Mr E. Olds. Ten new members were elected.

! The question of entering a third grade team in the competitions was left to the committee to report. The selection of a coach was held over.

Votes of thanks were passed to those who had placed cars at the disposal ol the club during last season, to the chairman and secretary, and to the Miniature Rifle Club for the use of the meeting room.
