MINERS ON STRIKE
TROUBLE AT STATE MINES.
AGAINST CO-OPERATIVE WORK
(Per Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, March 11. The State miners are on strike. A stop-work meeting tills morning was attended by nearly 200 members. After discussion as to the most effective means to bo used in forcing the abandonment of the co-operative contracts, it was decided by 146 votes to 31 to declare a strike as from toThe stoppage may be protracted, as the Miners’ Council, which holds considerable funds, is backing the union, and will render all the assistance at its command, morally and financially. The Department was understood to be pursuing a waiting policy, but in all probability will now take a hand in affairs. ■ . , In response to an enquiry by the union, the Hon. G. J. Anderson stated in a telegram that the Department had no intention of repudiating the contracts. , , . The position is that of a serious deadlock, the union secretary remarking: “ The gloves are now off, and to-day’s meeting was very solid. There is no indication yet whether the dispute will involve the other coalminers.
