SIX TUBE TUNNELS THAT LEAP OR DIVE.
By means of on© of th© most nonderful engineering feats of recent years—a junction of six tunnels on the Underground Railway between Euston and Camden Town —the City and South London Railway has been linked up with the Hampstead tube. The tun nels from them junction m a unique wav by vaulting and passing beneath each other. “ There is no other piece of engineering like it in the world, an Underground official told a Daily Mail” reporter. ‘‘lt was an extraordinary intricate task but it had. to be done, so that through services might be run right from Hendon or Highgate to Moorgate Street, in the citv, and later on to Clapham. Ihe ordinary way of making a junction is to make tunnels converge at a flat point. Had this plan been followed, however, it would have meant that trains would always have been held up to allow others to pass, and a great deal of time would have been wasted. As it is, six trains will he able to pass at the same time by means of these new tunnels. On Easter. Sunday, when the junction was first in working ordei more than 100 trains an hour ran to and from the city and Hendon and Highgate. If necessary, we could mn 160 on the ‘through’ route. The direct service should prove a great boon to many thousands of people who travel between the.se points, and who have had to change several times to reach their destination.” He added that the Underground Railwav were very proud of The new junction. “Much of the work had to be done while trains were running, he said, “but although 17 connections had to he made between the new and the old tunnels, everything was carried out without,a hitch and with mathematical precision.” It is estimated that the full extension of the Hampstead lube from Hendon to Edgware will he accomplished by July.
