Constable Excell, who has been st&--tioned in Ashburton for eight years,, has been transferred to take charge of> the Kaitangata (Balclutha) station.

Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., from Wellington yesterday, and r&~ turned in the evening to join the New Zealand Parliamentary delegation toSouth Africa.

A cable message from London sajß that A. Barnett, a New Zealand research student at Clare College, Cambridge, has been awarded a Denham Baynes studentship of £IOO yearly for two years, for research in Physics.

Mi* Andrew Brown (president) and Mr J. B. Christian (secretary) of the Ashburton A. and P. Association, returned to Ashburton this afternoon after having attended iLe annual conference of the New Zealand Coimcil of Agriculture, at Wellington.

A cablegram from London reports, that Engineer-Commander S. F. Coopper has been appointed secretary of the English Rugby Union, vice MrC. J. B. Marriott, who is . retiring Commander Coopper made seven appearances as an English international; between 1900 and 1907. ..';

Mr H. Belshaw, M.A., who has been the resident tutor of the branch of the W.E.A. for the past* year, formerly on the staff of the Ashburton High School, left Timaru yesterday for Wellington, en route for Cambridge University, England, where • he will commence research study in; rural credits. There were a number of students and personal' friends at the ■ station, who gave him a hearty send--off.
