TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.

(JEYom "Guardian," June 11, 1899.) Bowling.—There was a fair attendance at the meeting held last night in Mn David Thomas's office, to make

arrangements for formation of a bowling club in Ashburton. A club was formed, and the subscription, with the object of making the club a popular one, and strong numerically was fixed at one guinea. It was resolved to join the Sports Association, and Messrs Coleman, Snodgnass, and Drummond were appointed delegates. News in Brief.—Messrs Nieoll Bros., will conduct an auction sale of tweeds and drapery at their East Street Central Mart to-morrow. —Mr IVank Curtis has now on view a choice collection of jewellery, including gem rings and jewellery. —On Saturday next Mr Henry Stephenson will offer at auction at his Havelock Street rooms a large and choice selection of seasonable fur goods, on account of the well-known furrier, Mr Gilbert refreshment rooms at the corner of East and Burnett streets have been taken over by Mrs James McGregor. Improved Street Lighting.—The incandescent gas burners recently installed at various points in Ashburton are a great improvement on the old form of burner. Crossings that were dangerous to foot passengers under the old regime are now brilliantly lighted, and may be used with safety. The first meeting of the Sports AssoI ciation was held in the Arcade ChamIbers. Following are the delcjater selected from the various clubs: — Bowling, Messrs Snodgrass, Drummond, and Coleman; tennis, Messrs "Upton and Cox; croquet, Messrs Cuthbertson and Denshire; cricket, Messrs Andrews and Percy; Ashburton Football Club, Mr L. Hobbs; Pirates Football Club, Mr F. Pritehard; Junior Football Club, Mr D. Revell; A.A.C. and A.C., Messrs R. Shearman and R. Clark; St. Patrick's Sports Association, Messrs H. McSherry and D. McDonnell; Ariel Bicycle Club, Messrs H. Willis and R. J. Henry; hockey, Mr F. Clark. The following were chosen the association's executive:— Messrs Cox, Cuthbertson, L. Hobbs, Snodcrass, D. McDonnell, R. J. Henry, and R. Clark, the last-named being elected also treasurer. _ ! Presentation.—A presentation was made to the Rev. Father Cooney on his leaving Rangiora to take duty m Ashburton. The school children gave him an address and a biretta. Mr B. Anderson presented him with a purse of sovereigns on behalf of the parishioners, and Mesdames Boyd and Kennedy a portmanteau and travelling rug from the ladies. He is to be succeeded m Rangiora bv the Rev. Father Hyland, from one of the West Coast districts.
