Ashburton Sports 'Association.—At the adjourned meeting of provisional delegates in connection with the proposedl Sports Association, Mr P. H. Cox presided. A committee consisting of Messrs C. D. Hardie, G. W. Andrews, 11 Shearman, and R. M. Cuthbertson was appointed to draft a >--!">me of representation of the sports clubs. Entertainment.—The Rev. J. R. Clark gave a lantern lecture in the Orange Hall, in aid of the Prohibition League funds. The pictures exhibited were very superior photographs in classical art in illustration of the life of Christ. The only regret was the hall was not crowded with Ashburton people, for the absentees certainly missed a treat. The Rev. R. Taylor gave a descriptive lecture, and at in- j tervals sacred songs were given by Mrs H. Steel, Misses Steel, Potter, ( and Barratt, and Messrs Craighead and Gates. An orchestra recruited by the last-named also contributed I selections, and Mrs Claridge_ played the accompaniments to the voices. News in Brief.—The drag of Messrs i McConnell and Oompton will leave for Methven this evening for the convenience of visitors to the coursing tomorrow. It is understood that the rendezvous will be Mr Cameron's homestead.

Mayfield News.—The hall was well filled on Friday evening, when a sendoff was given the Tweedy Mr Hain. president of the > Mayfield Mutual Improvement Association, occupied the chair. A varied programme of music, recitations, and readings was contributed by the following:— Mesdames Hain and W. G. Gallagher, Miss Hain, Messrs Andrew Simpson, G. H. Sewell, A. Laurens, James Dellow, and Angus Reid. The accompaniments were played by Mrs H. Rayner. Towards the close of the concert, Mr W. G. Gallagher presented Miss Janet Tweedy with a collection of music. Mr A. Reid then presented Mrs Tweedy with a purse containing a cheque which had been subscribed by the district. Messrs James Dellow, Dan Kellahan, and G. L. Twentyman spoke in eulogistic terms of the family. The youths of Mayfield presented Master Tweedy with a silver-mounted riding whip. Mr Tweedy replied on behalf of the recipients, and Mr W. P. S. Eimslie called for three cheers for each member of the family.
