HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT,

The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated March 8, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:— Butter.

The demand for butter and cheese / has hot been stimulated by the reduced ” prices, and market is slow. Danish is selling largely to America and Germany. The butter market continues slow. Official quotations are:—N.Z. — finest, salted, 180 s to. 184 s; exceptional 186 s; unsalted., 180 s to 184 s; other qualities, 160 s to 178 s. Australian — Salted, finest, 170 s to 1745; unsalted 170 s to 1745; other qualities, salted, 150 s to 168 s; unsalted, 150 s to 1665. Argentine—l6os to 162 s and up to 1645; other qualities, 140 sto 158 s, Danish—2l2s to 214 s per cwt. Cheese.

English finest farmers’ is scarce, and prices steady. Canadian is scarce and prices nominal. Fair inquiry for New Zealand and heavy supplies have caused further reduction in price. Quotations are: English—Finest farmers’, 142 sto 1465. N.Z—Finest, coloured and white. 86s to 88s. Australian— Finest and fine, coloured and white, 80s to 84s per cwt. Casein.

Buyers are holding off in anticipation of lower prices. French rennet, £SB to £BO per ton. Argentine lactic, £46 to £49 per ton. Wool.

Bradford continues firm. The demand from Germany is the reason for a slight rise in prices all round. Tops are quoted: 64’s (merino), 5s lid to j6s ; 56’s (super halfbred), 4s; -40’ s prepared (coarse crossbred), 2s 2d per lb.

WELLINGTON, March 11

The Melbourne representative of the N.Z. Meat Producers’ Board advises V cable that the number of lambs exported from Australia during the fortnight ended March 7 was 7841 carcases.

BANK OF NEW ZEALAND REPORT

The Bank of New Zealand has received the following advice from its London office, under date March 7:— Frozen meat. —The mutton market remains steady. The lamb market is depressed owing to heavy arrivals. The beef market is tshort of supplies, and
