ENTERTAINMENTS.

»IS MAJESTY’S THEATRE.

“THE. ABYSMAL BRUTE.” What isi a “real man”? What is a “gentleman”? Those two terms are constantly in use in to-day’s literature of several types. Whether or not they are understood is a question to be decided by the individual reading or using them.. Webster achieved simple definitions of “man” and “gentleman” but usage makes such words more complex than the dictionary will consider. Jack London’s famous novel of the prize ring, ‘The Abysmal Brute,’ has been filmed and comes to His Majesty’s Theatre to-night, and tomorrow night as a Universal-Jewel special production starring Reginald Denny, the hero, of “The Leather Pushers.” This story has for its chief male character a young man who is all that would be called a “real man.” At the same time he is courteous, intelligent and possessed of a refined nature. Yet he is a ]srize» fighter, versed in the rough tactics of the ring and supposedly saturated with its atmosphere. In view of the age-old prejudice among certain sensitive people against the boxing sport, and, on the other hand, in view of the newer, cleaner ideals of the game, is this man a “gentleman”? The heroin© does not think so. She is an ultra-cultured, superfined creature of the most exclusive classv The role is an exceptionally strong one, played by Mabel Julienne Scott, an actress of the highest renown. “The Abysmal Brute,” guided by the gifted pen of London and the superb directorial ability of Hobart Henfev, analyses the questions from both- sides.

“THE WOMAN IN HIS HOUSE.”

That mother love may triumph even when science has failed is the story told in “The Woman in His House,” a remarkable photoplay which will be the attraction at His Majesty’s Theatre on Friday and Saturday nights, and at Saturday’s matinee. It deals with the sacrifice and devotion which went to the cure of a child who science had said would always be a hopeless criople. An all-star cast appears in this picture, headed by Ramsay Wallace, wlio nas tne part ot the over-am-bitious husband and father, a great physician. The other principal players are Thomas Holding, George Fisher, Gareth Hughes, Winter Hall, Catherine Van Buren, Bob Walker and little Richard Hedrick. The latter has the nart of the afflicted child. The locale embraces the picturesque, rockbound coast of Eastern Canada, and the home and environment of the busy New York physician.
