Methve-n Literary Society.—One of the most successful evenings in connection with the Methven Literary Society was held at Methven on Thursday. The subject on the syllabus was a lecture by the president, the Rev. J. R. Clark, on “Physiognomy.” The lecture was comprehensive and racy r and showed that the subject was not Hew to the lecturer, who, to it, exhibited a number of lantern slides on which were depicted eyes, noses, mouths, etc., in great variety. The vice-president, Mr Morgan, occupied the chair.

Chertsey School Committee. —Tho usual monthly meeting of the Chertsey School Committee was held in the schoolroom on Saturday evening. There were present Mr G. W. Scarlet (in the chair), and Messrs J. Stringfellow, sen., J. Copland, J. Steward, and G. Campbell. The master’s report showed the average to have been 45 during the month. It was agreed to get a new aslipan for the schoolhouse. The question of sewing prizes was discussed. A letter from the mistress was read concerning the matter. It was finally decided to give two prizes in each class, and the secretary is to ask Mesdames Hardy and Holland, of Rakaia, to kindly judge the work. Ashburton Stock Market. —There was a fair attendance at the Ashburton yards to-day, and a moderate entry of sheep. Beef was again very scarce. The following prices were obtained: Fat Sheep—Ewes: 8s 6d, 9s, 9s 6d, 10s Id, 11s 7d, 11s BcT, 13s, 14s 3d. Wethers: 11s, 12s 6d, 12s 9d, 13s, 14s Id, 14s od, 15s 9d. 16s, 16s Id, 17s 9d. Ewes and wethers: 11s 6d, 13s 3d, 13s 4d, 14s 3d, 14s pd; merino wethers, 8s Bd. Freezers —Crossbred wethers, 12s 6, i3s 6d; crossbred ewes and wethers, chiefly wethers, 12s 6d. , Store Sheep—Crossbred ewes in lamb, 4s 4d, ss, 5s Id, 6s 9d to 8s Bd, hard to quit; lambs, 6s. Fat Cattle —Steers, top price £8 15s heifers, £6 17s 6d; one cow, £6.
