RACING CLUBS AND TAXES.

A SORE POINT

(Per Press Association.^ DUNEDIN, This Day. At the annual meeting of tke Dunedin Jockey Club, Mr L. -G. Hazlett said if some relief from taxation were not forthcoming, some of €he racing clubs would haye to go out of existence. The Club was not aHie to go m for a scheme of improvements at Wingatui while the imposition of the present heavy taxation continued. He -thought the time had arrived when they should assert themselves. He •suggested that a question be put to for (Parliamentary honors. They had taken matters teo quietly in the past, and it looked as if an attempt were being made fce crush them out of existence. Mr Lough (treasurer) said the regrettable fact was that the Club had not previously had a better year or tetter racing, and the revenue kept HP remarkably well. Under the cir- ' enmstances the Club might reasonably have expected to earn a- very handsome prefit, but the Govenament took £24,000. He denied the contention -that the taxation did not come out of the Club’s finances, but from the pockets of the public. He thought the Government now saw the handwriting on the wall, and relief wouM come shortly. Unless something wa* done the raising clubs would be wiped off the slate. Mr A. C. Hanlon was president.
