MEETING OF COUNCIL.

The Ashburton Borough Council met last night. There were present: The Mayor (Mr R. Galbraith), and Messrs W. G. iiillier, F. Z. D. Ferriman, Jt, A. Collins, R. Kerr, John Watson, W. H. Woods, J. W. The Mayor reported the amounts received since last meeting £6o3 9s 7d, including general rate £253 2s. remitted.—Received. The Valuation Department forwarded a circular letter pointing out that many people avoid the payment of fees by obtaining valuation data from the local authorities. Applicants for figures should be referred to the Department after the rolls had been closed for public inspection. The applications • were usually made by financial agents or institutions. ■ It was pointed out that the matter did not affect the Borough; it affected only those bodies which rated on the unimproved value.
