SENSATION IN ILLINOIS.
26 LUNATICS AT LARGE.
BATTLE AT AN ASYLUM. (Per Press Association, Copyright). (Received This Day, 8.55' a-tn.) NEW YORK, July 23. According to a message from Chester, Illinois, armed posses have recaptured all ‘but 11 of the -26 insane criminals (many of whom are murderers) who escaped from the Illinois Criminal Insane Hospital. Two guards were stabbed and one manaic .shot dead in a battle preceding the" escape. Seventy-five inmates were in an open-air cage for exercise when they attacked the guards and wrenched the bars apart wath wooden benches. Other guards Who rushed to the scene prevented Ivholesale ©scapes but 26 eluded pursuit overnight causing a panic in the surrounding neighbourhood, all houses being ’barricaded.
