ESCAPE FROM GAOL
CPer Press Association.) AUCKLAND,. July 22. A prisoner named Frank Ballar, aged twenty-- :: o, sensationally escaped from gaol ye ...day morning. He was helping to serve breakfast at 6.30 o’clock when he was missed. A warder found a rope of blankets from the watch-tower to the wall. The prisoner dropped fifty feet, walked along the top of the wall, then dropping another 20ft to soft ground, t here his footprints were seen. Them was a dense fog at th# time, and no further trace was seen. The only trace is that prison clothes were found in a house in the city from which a suit was taken. Ballar was sentenced at Gisborne on June S to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour for theft, and three months’ for escaping from custody, to be followed by three years’ reformative detention.
