AMERICANS AT HAMILTON
HAMILTON, February 7
Two members of the American athletic team appeared here to-day in a sports programme arranged by the Hamilton Amateur Athletic Club. The weather was fine, with a breeze against the runners. Kirksey took part in the 100, 220 and 440 events from scratch. In the 100yds, in the heat in which Kirksey started, a false start was declared, Kirksey being left on the mark. When the field was again despatched he failed to move, and again he expressed dissatisfaction with the method of starting, but agreed to compete in the finals of the 100 and 220 and 400yds, in an exhibition run. This was sanctioned, and Kirksey was successful in each event. The American's •time for the 100yds was 101-ss, for the 220yds 23 l-ss, and 53s for the 440vds.
Merchant's best shot was 1 44ft lin, Kirksey, with a handicap of 10ft, winning with 45ft 4in. In an exhibition discus throw, Merchant covered 125 ft 9in, which is his best. In an exhibition with the hammer, he threw it 157 ft Bin.
