PUNISHED BY MOORS

SPANIARDS’ EXPERIENCES

GENERAL AS STONE-CARRIER.

CHAINED TO WALL AT NIGHT. (Per Press Association, . Copyright.) (Received This Day, 11.40 a.m.) (Reuter.) ' MADRID, January 30. A message from Melilla says General Navarro and other high officers captured by the Moors on the occasion of the Spanish’ disaster last year, have been ransomed and have arrived at Melilla. They were treated in the hardest manner during their captivity. General Navarro was employed in carrying stones and other material for the construction of roads and houses and was chained to a wall at night with an iron ring round the neck. A number of prisoners died from neglected wounds and others succumbed to the bastinado.

[Bastinado is the European name for an Oriental form of punishment, which consists of inflicting blows with a stick upon the victim, generally on the soles of his feet and sometimes on his back.]
