MATERNITY MORTALITY AND V.D.

(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, December 13. ’ A meeting of the Board of Health was held to-day, the Hon. C. J. Parr (Minister for Public Health) presiding. The question of carrying out the recommendations of the recent Commission on maternity mortality was discussed, and some interesting figures were furnished by the Health Department showing the number, of deaths from puerperal septicaemia, and how they were distributed between public hospitals, private hospitals, and private homes. The statistics indicated tli at a much larger proportion of maternity mortality occurred when confinements took place in private homes. The hoard asked the Departmnet for further information with regard to the inspection of such cases. The recent report on venereal diseases furnished by the committee of the board was also discussed at some length. The board unanimously adopted the report, and eulogistic references were made to the good work done by the Hon. W. H. Triggs (chairman) and the other members of the committee. A resolution was passed recommending the Government to legislate as early as possible on the lines laid down in the report, which includes a recommendation that notification in V.D. cases be made compulsory.
