If O. Henry were alive and in Auckland to-day he would assuredly find | romance and material in plenty for a | book full of stories, as witness the fol- j lowing comedy from real life, says the “Star.” “Excuse me, but would you do me the favour of reading these two letters, since I cannot read?’ 7 The words were addressed to a young man as he alighted from a tram at the end of the first section. The supplicant was a well-dressed man of about 35. While the letters were being read to him he listened eagerly, and certain details had to be repeated so that he would get a good, gnp of their significance. “My Lonely Boy,” commenced j one of the epistles, and what followed ; ♦made it clear to the reader that it was obviously an answer to a matrimonial advertisement. The lady had “£75 saved up” and was longing' to meet somebody nice. Would the lonely boy meet her outside a certain grey pile at the foot of Queen street at 7.30 the following evening ? She would wear a brown costume, and he might be good enough to wear a white flower on the right-hand lapel of his coat, so that she could distinguish him. Ihe other letter was on similar lines, but —as this is a true story—it would not be fair to divulge the secrets which the “lonely boy” - told the youngman concerning the writer of the billet-doux. He meant to meet the lady of the brown costume, and repeated the ap _ pointed time over and over again. He was grateful to the stranger who had obliged by reading his letters for him, and in expressing his thanks, he explained that he had been reared m the country and had’ not enjoyed all the educational advantages of the oity youth! It was also explained that a friend had obliged in writing the advertisements.
