The Paris correspondent of the "Observer" says M. Clemenceau's defeat astonished the public, who had underrated the importance of the underground work in the lobby by men like AI. Briand. The election of M\ Deschanol means M. Briand's early return to the Premiership.
It is significant that public comment on the victory of M. Clemenceau's political enemies hints that M. Caillaux is now certain to be acquitted.
