ASHBURTON TROTTING CLUB

The Ashburton Trotting Club's Winter meeting was brought to a successful conclusion yesterday afternoon. The conditions were all in favour of a record meeting, the weather being fine, and the attendance exceptionally large.' Early in the'meeting all thorace books had been disposed of, and several of tho late arrivals were willing to pay 2s 6d to anyoiie willing to part with tho desired "correct card." The fields . were exceptionally large, and it was soon found impossible to despatch events to schedule time. The flag system had been introdticed for each division of horses, .tho dropping of the flag by tho holder indicating to the starter that each division was in line. .It could hardly he claimed that tho system • was a success, and no doubt a' good deal of money was shut out of the machine, and the starting of events'., gradually dragged behind .time. The best .race of the day was the Sapling Stakes, in which only a field of eight started, and tho horses were fairly well'bunched together from .•.tart to finish. In.the other races the fields were very much spread out, and on., two or three occasions the baekmarkers.had a bad spin. The. totaiisator investments were ; weW - ahoad of last year, aggregating £20,301 10s, as against £16,675. The' Eierhtli (South Canterbury) Regimental Baud was in attendance, and enlivened the intervals between the races.
