PICTURE SHOW PANIC
TERRIBLE SCENES.

There are 131 dead as the result of the Valence picture theatre i panic. Hundreds were injured. j
The scenes were appalling. i Four thousand were ; present, and the'outbreak of fire was trivial, but the stampede was terrifying. Piles of -strug- ; gling women and children choked the turnings of the staircase.. .The Bishop of -Valence was present, and trjied 'to calm the crowd, and eventually ordered the orchestra to play the ''Marseillaise," which gradually . allayed' the" panic ,but death had done its '.ghastly,., work. " Blood was spattered on the. walls and stairs, for many were wound-' 1 ed on breaking the windows. The: men present behaved well in theres-i cue work. Heartrending scenes were. witnessed at the hospital. ■ , ■
