In the British Isles gold is found; only in small quantities. There are; :i. few mines in North Wales where it is won from rock of poor quality. Of 500.000 Jews who served in the war five won the V.C., over 100; the' D.CM., and 250 the M.M., apart from many 'decorations won by. officers. ; It is' stated that a movement is in; progress in Hampstead with the object of erecting a memorial hall in honour' i of Hampstead soldiers who were killed in action. A committee of five local residents has been set up, with Mr W. Robinson chairman, to formulate ' a scheme to be submitted to a public meeting- at an early date. Lieutenant F. Brophy, who returned by the Arawa, speaks in high terms of the interest taken by General Sir Andrew Russell in the various activities! and amusements on the boat duringthe vovace. General Russell, he says, Used to discourse to the soldiers every Sunday afternoon on "How we can best hell) New Zealand," and his ideas and remarks then became the subject for open discussion, and often very lively .criticism.
