Mr S. R. Johnston, who has been County water-race ranger in the Mayfield district for some years,, has been 'appointed manager of the Mount Potts Station., Ashburtoa Gorge.

At a special meeting of the Christchurch Presbytery yesterday afternoon the call; to the Rev. R. M. Ryeburn, MiAiv'to St. Andrew's Church was anstained. The Rev. At a meeting of the committee of the Ashburton County Racing Club last evening reference was made to the death, of Mr C. W. Nicoll, who had been an energetic steward and valuedmember of the committee, and the secretary was instructed 1 to forward a letter of condolence to the relatives of •the deceased. Lieutenant Leslie Buchanan (killed) was at the outbreak of the war editor of the "Barling Downs Gazette," Queensland. He enlisted and underwent a course of training at Duntrooh Military School. He obtained a commission, and was sent to France. In May of this year he was wounded in. the chest, but the wound was not severe, and he was soon back with his unit. News has now been received of Jus death in France. He is* a son of the late Mr" Buchanan, second headmaster of the Ashburton High School, and a brother of Mr E. S. Buchanan, M.A., B.Sc, and Mr A. J. Buchanan, MA-- M.8., both well known at Canterbury College in th© early nineties, and of Mrs Richmond Hursthouse, wife of Major Hursthouse, N.Z.B.C. Lieutenant Buchanan leaves a widow and an adopted chfld.
