A SLY GROG CASE.
ALLENTON MAN PLEADS GUILTf
A HEAVY FINE
At the Ashburton Magistrate's Court this afternoon, before Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.M., • William Price, of Charles Street, Allenton, was charged with selling liquor—to wit, whisky— to one John Daniel Moriarty, without being duly licensed to sell'the same, contrary to the form of statute in such cases made and provided.
Mr Buchanan, who appeared for the accused, pleaded guilty. He said that the accused was a cripple and could not do ai# manual work. He used to do a bit of horse-breaking. The accused had recently , been" operated on,, and could not earn any money, and had yielded to tho temptation' and &old the whisky.
[ Senior-Sergeant Ryan 'said tlrmt the police found nine bottles of whisky in the accused's house.'
'The Magistrate said it was no use inflicting a small penalty for such an offence in a " dry " district. Accused would bo fined £25 and costs.
