CORN PRODUCTION BILL.

WAGE AMENDMENT DEFEATED

LONDON, July 23

An urgent Government whip was issued regarding Mr .Wardle's ■amend-' merit: : The Government regarded 25s as the minimum wage for agriculturists as fundamental to the Bill. ProGovernment, newspapers warned their opponents not to create a crisis. Mr Prothero said the Government could not accept Mr Wardle's amendment. If he pressed for a division the Government must stand or fall by the result. The Bill was essential to our existence and safety. The minimum wage was.,-irreducible, but the Wages Board could increase it. The proposed' increased wage imposed ,a payment of an-additional £40,000,000 on the farmers.

The late Government had miscalculated the submarine menace, and the changes and shortages of the world's supply of grain. 1 We could not afford a third miscalculation.'

The amendment was defeated by 301 votes to 102.
