VIOLENT STRUGGLE CONTINUES
LONDON, July 22
A French communique states:—The battle continued throughout the day with extreme \ Tiolence in the region of Hurtebise and Crnonne. Our observers located numerous German batteries, the whole of whose principal efforts were directed against the casemates of the California Plateau,
"t ."" which. powerful effectives incessantly r attacked. Our troops resisted with' admirable bravery, vigorously counterattacking the enemy, who were thrown back often from the casemates to which he had clung, with onormous losses.
The enemy obtained a foothold on the California Plateau in our first lino during the afternoon. .The fighting contiues desperately. The artillery activity is extremely lively in the Champagne, and on the left bank of the Meuse.
