GERMANY'S PEACE TALK
SPEECH BY SIR EDWARD CARSON
LONDON, July 21
Sir Edward Carson was presented with the freedom of the city of Belfast.
In reply to the presentation, describing Dr. Michaelis's speech .as really
that of Herr yon Bethmann-Hollweg, he said:—"lf the Germans want peace we are prepared to-morrow to treat— not with Prussianism, but with! the .rest of the German nation. If they are sincere in repudiating the wish to acquire territory of the exercise of violence towards others, we tell them to come forward and offer to enter into negotiations — but conditionally on ■their withdrawing bcliind the Rhine. When they show contrition for drenching countries with blood we shall be willing to see what can be done to release the world from the terrors of' arms. But it must be a realpeace, ensuring that the sacrifices of those-who. have fallen have not been in vain." ,
