NEWS AND NOTES.

LOWCLIFFE

On Wednesday, July 4, a social was held to say farewell to Private William Dolan, who was home on final leave. A presentation was also made to Private J. Dwyer, '.who enlisted with the Fourteenth Reinforcements, and was wounded at Armentieres, and invalided home. There was a large attendance, over which Mr C. E. Norrish presided! Tho meeting( opened with the National ■ .Anthem." A good programme was given by the following:— Songs,-Misses Sliaw and Rogers (2), and Mrs W. Bruce, Messrs Brown and Sweeney; recitations, Miss Watson; musical items, Mip-ses Bruce, Ford, and McKeage. Misses Rogers (2) and Miss Bruce played the , accompaniments. During an interval, Mr J. Nicholas,'on behalf of the Patriotic Committee, presented Messrs Dolan and Dwyer with,a pipe and tobacco pouch; he congratulated them on the step they had taken, and trusted that Private 'Dolan would return safely home again. Messrs Jewell and Brown also referred to the sterling qualities of the two soldiers. Supper was partaken of.which brought a most enjoyable evening to a close.
