ASHBURTON AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETY. ■■ . {

ANNUAL MEETING

The annual meeting of the Ashburton Amateur Operatic Society was held in Victoria Hall last evening. Mi* Charles Brown presided over a moderate attendance.

Mr P. L. Orr (treasurer) made a verbal report of the year's work, and stated that the operations in the past year had been most successful. The opera "lolanthe" had been staged, and the season lasted for four nights, during which the attendances had been large and the returns very satisfactory. The members had worked together excellently, and their efforts had borne good fruit. The society's financial position was sotihd, and the members could look forward to' another .successful season. The receipts had amounted to £454 17s Id, while in the expenditure (£423 Is) were included donations of £130 to the Red Cross Funds, £120 to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund, and £173 Is for miscellaneous items. This left a balance of £31 16s Id, of which £30 was made up by members' subscriptions. There was left £1 16s Id, which would be handed over to the Red Cross Fund. The receipts from "lolanthe" amounted to £238. Mr Orr stated that he regretted he would he unable to continue to act ac treasurer, and tendered his resignation. . The report and balance-sheet were adopted. , .

Several of the ''members spoke in eulogy of Mr Orr's work while connected with the society, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded him. After some discussion, it was unani™oujsly decided to .produce Gilbert and Sullivan's opera, "The Gondoliers," at an early date.
