\ South Hillend lady (the Winton " Record") states is credited with having dug and bagged 18 bags of potatoes in one day and 16 the next.

America's new "first lady" —it is her official designation—who has now to share all her husband's world of troubles, has only been married a little over a year to President Wilson. Her first husband was Mr Normal Gait, and their salon in their New York home was a rallying-place for men of letters, artists, travellers, etc. Mrs Wilson is 39 years of >age, tall, dark-haired, blueeyed, and is credited with consummate knowledge of the world. As hostess all America looks to her—an immense continent, 3000 miles across, with a population of a hundred millions. She must not be haughty at all, nor must _ she cheapen her great office. The official pair are hedged round with rules and traditions which are none the less strict for being unwritten. Thus the lady of the White House cannot accept miscellaneous invitations in the federal capital, nor may she attend formal dinners outside the Cabinet circle. At White House; balls she must not take part in a waltz, but may walk demurely through a quadrille with an ambassador or high functionary of State. At one time the sale of invitation cards to functions at White House became a ■grave scandal, swamping it with selfinvited guests, and forcing the President himself to raid his wife's larder at BUpper time in search of some cold pie, or even a few sandwiches) as his "guests" had cleared his festive board as if a svyarm of locusts had been let loose on it.
