THE EXHIBITS.

Horses. Tho entries in tho draught section did not compare favourably with tho&e of last .year. This is attributable to the fact, that owing to the bad season many horses are out of condition. The judge in the male class (Mr W. McAulay) stated that generally there was little to choose between the horses, though some were shown out of condition. In the female claBS, Mr W. J. Doak entered his three-year-old filly, " Ochtertyrc Princess," and met with.success. The judge (Mr H. E. Fincham), commenting on the filly, said she was of a sqperior class, and more would doubtless be heard;of her. .;, ■;'. ■ • The judging of the ponies and light horses commenced to-day. Very fair competition was shown in the pony section not exceeding 14 handß in heigh-t. The judge (Mr W. Hayward, jun^ was well pleased with the fine staaffp of animals, which, he stated^, were well ribbed, well eet up, and true cobs. After a keen competition, Mr D. and A. Gillanders were awarded first .prke. The judge had also a word of praise to otter for cobs up to 15 hands, which were tin even class. Messrs D. and A. Gillanders were again successful in thiß class. The entries in trotting horses were small. llr J. Tully was awarded the Ashburton Racing Oub's prizo for the best trotter or pacer. In regard to harness horses, the entries have been -steadily decreasing year by year, which is accounted for by the presence 'd"f the motor-car. Those 'on the grounds to-day were owned by local exhibitors, with the exception of one entry- Old supporters of tho show state that they have seen a, much better class of harness horses at AshBurton «howfi. Experimental Area Exhibit. At the request of the association, the Agricultural Department arranged for a display in the produce hall of a number of fodder plants from the Aahburton experimental area during the past season. As moßt farmers know, the season haa been exceptionally dry, and the results of experiments under those conditions were looked upon with great interest, .especially as it was clearly demonstrated what .could be .accomplished by systematic cultivation and thorough preparation of the soil. The exihibit was supplemented by several parcels of lucerne grown' under irrigation :at the Burnham Industrial School, and the :Sohpol for the Deaf and Dumb at Sumner. Specimens of white, lnpin, used for manuring ; sandy soils, was also ehqwn. Another interesting feature of tfhej^iisplay was exhibits of the latest machinery for farm work. A gasoline engine and plant suitable for threshing grain on a small holding was of special interest to farmers. The department also exhibited a stock-weighing machine, which is used for recording the increase in weight of sheep that have been grazied on different crops. Tho exhibit showed that the department is working «>n scientific lines to try and Bolve^eome of -the farmers' problems. An interesting exhibit in cereals was a Bample of Japanese buck-wheat, grown and reaped since December last. The sample shows tho possibilities of raising a £heap cereal, which might be used as a substitute in the event of a shortage of wlieat. It is understood that this is a " last resort" crop in America, and Is largely grown when the wheat crop threatens to be unsuccessful or insuflirient Mr A. McTaggart, of tho Agricultural Department, was m charge of the display, and supplied a, great deal of inte?eiing information to farmers < and others. Butter-fat Test. Tho buttor-fnt test this year, for cow ■of any breed givinp, the _ best butter-fat result* under the Babooek test, dwindled down to one entry from Mr T McDowell, ot Wakanm, who was awarded the prize. In the absence of other competitors, tho stewards did not trouble to mttoree ♦ the f"H tost, and consequently the usual table of results is not available. Mr McDowell has won this competition "on a number of previous
