SANGUINARY FIGHTING.

THE WESTERN THEATRE.

REPEATED GERMAN ATTACKS. EVERYWHERE REPULSED. The High Commissioner reports:— LONDON, May 31. To the loft of the Mouse there was a sanguinary combat yesterda.y and in the course of the night, between Mort Hommo and tho Meuse. Following up a violent bombardment lasting two days, the enemy launched repeated ' concentrated attacks on the trenches east of Mort Homme and Cumiores. Everywhere the enemy were repulsed, with important losses. ■ ■

South of Cumiores the German attacks made in the sides of the village succeeded at first in throwing us" back in tho direction of tho station at Chattancourt, but a, lively counterattack allowed tis to oust the enemy up to the borders of the village Somo parties of G-ermans who glided along the Mouse, favoured by a fog until they reached the upper end of Chattancourt Station, were completely annihilated by our fire. On tho right bank' the artillery combat is intermittent. In Haute Alsace the enemy, after intense artillery preparation, attacked our positions on a front of about 2200 metres cast of Seppois, taking foot in some portions of our tronches; but they were immediately thrown out by counter-attacks.
