RECRUITING.
SEVENTEENTHS WELL OVER .STRENGTH. We received the following this morning from the chairman of the Recruiting Board (the Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey):— As was anticipated from the previous returns of enlistments, there is no doubt that the 17th Reinforcements will mobilise in camp this week well over strength. The official figures of registrations, for the Infantry, all other arms of the service being full, as at Friday last, are as follows:— Group 1, Auckland City, surplus 172 Group 2, Paeroa, shortage ... 15 Group 3, Whangarei, surplus ... 2 Group 4., Hamilton, shortage ... 11 Total shortage for Auckland Military District 148 Group 5, Wellington City, surplus 3 Group 6, Palmerston North, surplus ... ... ... 12 Group 7, Napier, shortage ... 38 Group 7a, Masterton, shortage ... 2 Group 8, Hawera, surplus ... 19 Total shortage for Wellington Military District ... ... 6 Group 9, Christehurch City, shortage 19 Group 10, Timaru, surplus ... 28 Group 11, Kaiapoi, surplus ... 9 Group lla, Greymouth, shortage 15 Group 12, Nelson, surplus ... 14 Total surplus for Canterbury Military District 17 Group 13, Dunedin City, surplus 9 Group 14, Invorcargill, surplus ... 3 Group 15, Oamaru, shortage ... 17 Group 16, Milton, surplus ... 10 Total surplus for Otago Mili- ° tary District 5 ( Total Dominion surplus for the I 17th Reinforcements 164 There was existing at date of Fri-days-last a shortage on previuos drafts of 120 and a shortage arising out of wastage in camp of 121, or a total of 241. It will, therefore, be seen that the total Dominion shortage under all heads at date of Friday last, the 26th inst., was 77.'
