INTENSE GERMAN BOMBARDMENT.
THE FRENCH COMPELLED TO WITHDRAW. (Received May 31, 12.55 p.m.) PARIS, May 30. A communique states: —- After tho bombardment had been redoubled in violence, there was a very strong enomy attack on all positions between Mort Homme *'and , Cumieres, employing a' Division of newly-arrived men. All the assaults on the eastern slope of Mort Homme were broken. Further east, in the region of Caurettes Wood, after repulsing several fruitless attempts and inflicting heavy losses, we were obliged to withdraw our : advanced elements to the southern side of the BethincourtCumieres Road. The Germans' repeated efforts to dislodge us from the southern outskirts of Cumieres failed. ...... ' , The bombardment continued with intensity during the night. .'"',.
