MR HUGHES'S SPEECH.

The "Daily Chronicle,", in commending Mr Hughes for his speech at the Parliamentary luncheon,', says.:---," We must be careful not to push neutrals into German markets or to punish Germany at our own expence. It would be wise to support a policy preventing us depending upon Germany for important industries, and.also safeguarding us against iGerman commercial aggression." The "iDaily Telegraph" applauds Mr Hughes for emphasising the interrelation of commerce and industry and national safety. "Britain should imitate Germany in that respect, and she would find the Dominions with her heart and soul."
The "Times" says:—"While Sir Robert Borden created one precedent. Mr Hughes' s knowledge of Canadian and New Zealand opinion gives him n position of unusual authority in his relations with the Home Government." ' ■ i
