DETERMINED GERMAN ATTACKS. ALLIES* COMPLETELY SUCCESSFUL. (Received October 21, 8.45 a.m.) LONDON, October 20, A communiquo states :— Large enemy forces '<.ia4fc of Rheims i took the offensive on a J.O-kilometres front between La Porfipello and Prosnes, and were completely defeatod. The attack was most carefully prepared, a prolonged artillery bombardment being accompanied by chlorine gas. The enemy, at tho outset, penetrated some" parts of our front _ lino, 'but counter-attacks wero immediately launched, and the enemy were driven out of almost every point. A vigorous counter-offensive in the afternoon ejected the last of the. .enemy, who were thus thrown back completely, suffering heavy losses in their fruitless attack.
