IN THE BRITAIN. SIR EDWARD CARSON.
CAUSE OF HIS RESIGNATION. 4 ' A PERSONAL EXPLANATION. i (Received October 21, 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, Octobor 20. • Sir Edward Carson told the .House of Commons that his resignation was duo to divergence of views regarding Near East affairs. '•.■.' Sir Edward Carson occupied the" front Opposition bench. In a personal explanation, he said he found himself at complete variance with the Cabinet on questions touching the Near Eastern policy, ' and he felt, therefore, that his presence in the Cabinet was a source of" weakness/ not strength. He emphasised that there had been 'absolutely no personal disagreement, and no party questions were involved. Every member: of the Cabinet had only one idea—that of •carrying'oh the war at all sacrifices to a final and conclusive issue... He acknowledged the great difficulties "of co-ordinating our policy with that of our Allies, and at the sarao time consulting the sentiments'of neutrals. Wo were, he said, already, 'committed to operations at Gallipoli from which the new operations in the Balkans could not be -divorced: ■ In, his opinion, the situation ■ necessitated a clearly-defined, well-thought-out, and -decisive policy,,.and finding himself unable' to agree in any . respect with the Government's policy he folt his' presence- was no lomrer useful. This was not to suggest -that 5-his views "were comparable with those of.. greater experience and wisdom, but. ho held them strongly, conscientiously, , and patriotically. (Cheers).
