IN BRITAIN.
A LABOUR VIEW.
LONDON, October 17. j Mr Thomas, M.P., addressing the' railwaymen at Sheffield, said that a section of the newspapers had persistently demanded conscription, then Lord Kitchener's head, then Mr Asquith's, and now Sir Edward Grey's. If the British foreign policy was a failure it was been use the neutrals had been lod to believe that England was divided in. herself. The workers must not allow their fathers, their sons, and their brothers to sacrifice their lives vainly to gratify an unscrupulotis gang who were endeavouring to undermine ■the. national confidence. Mr Thomas stated that he had received a letter from Lord Derby, who was in favour of national service, but said that with the cordial co-operation of all politicians, including the conscriptionists, ho hoped for success in the new voluntary system. Mr Thomas added'that if the State took the workmen's labour' it took his only capital; and must take also the rich man's wealth. .
