ASHBURTON—THIS DAY. (Belore Mr V. G. Day, S.M.y ' Breach of Prohibition Order. William Laffey, for whom .Mr G. H. Buchanan appeared, was charged with a broach of his prohibition order. In, view of the fact that he'had already been fined for other offences in the same connection, he was convicted and discharged. Failing to Clear Water-Race. George "William Leadley (Mr G. H. Buchanan) pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to keep'a water-race clear on his property at Elgin. Mr C. W. Purnell appeared for the Ashbuiton County ' Council (the complainant). The ranger said that the race was in a bad condition, and that he had already warned Mr Leadley. ' Defendant was fined, 20s', with costs. Diverting Water from a Race. .The Ashburton County Council .proceeded against William Healey for diverting water from a race at Allenton. Defendant pleaded guilty. Mr C. W. Purnell, for the Council, said that defendant had diverted the water from a race on another man's property. Healey. stated that he bad committed the offence in ignorance. • He was nned.c2o.s, with costs. Exceeding Speed Limit. George. Harris/, and. .jGeorge Andrews were each fined"2os, with costs, for driving motor-cars too fast within the Borough. 'Civil Case. James Gourdie (Mr G. H. Buchanan) proceeded against Sydney- Beauvais (Mr FL D. Acland) for the'sum of £11 los 4d, said to be owing to plaintiff as the balance of the contract price of a house built by plaintiff for defendant. Defendant held that the work of building the house had -not beon carried out according to contract. Plaintiff stated that defendant had' taken over the house, and had been in possession for some months; Judgment was for plaintiff for £9. with costs (£1,175).
