FALSE PRETENCES.
WELLINGTON, August 13. Frank Stoke, with a number of aliases, was sentenced to-dajr to three weeks' imprisonment in Wellington gaol for obtaining money under false pretences. A couple of days ago he bought/a farm, not minding the big price asked. A deposit was to bo paid by a supposed brother, who was to arrive yesterday. In the meantime, he obtained 10s on a valueless • cheque for £5, drawn on a Palmerston bank. The land agent, had the curiosity to telegraph to the bank and discovered he had boeu victimised.
