ENTERTAINMENTS.
HAYWARD'S PICTURES. "The Mystery of the Sleeping Death" was the title of the iilra at the head of the new programme- screened at "His Majesty's Theatre last evening. With the ' hall mark of Miss Alice Joyce's w.ork upon it the picture was bound to [ be attractive, and it proved to be well j up to expectations. Miss Joyoe's act- J ing, as well as that of the supporting cast,: was well carried out. The story unfolded in the plot was something out j of the ordinary rut of picture plays, and it was entertaining throughout its screening. It is a real love story, em- j bracing an ancient Indian legend. The ' beautiful daughter of a wealthy man falls in love with one of her father's ] slaves, and refuses to give him up. As punishment, Khadin, a high priest, [ curses the two lovers to fall into a death trance. Once in every century the spirit of each was to leave the sleeping body, and, meeting', recognise the other. The picture then comes back to modern times, when th-e spirits of the two lovers, reincarnated in the bodies of the two young people, meet once again under peculiar circumstanoes. The plot is a fascinating one and has the subtle appeal of mystery. The "Pathe War Gazette" was a fairly good number. It included some scenes in the life of the late Lord Roberts just prior 'to his death, showing him reviewing troops and otherwise working up tho patriotic feelings of the people. This part of the picture was of special interest. Other subjects were "French ' Battleships," "Little .Mischief" (comic), "The Price of sv Lie" (drama),! "Summer' Resort Idyll" (comic), and "His New Profession" (comic)..
