IN NEW ZEALAND.
CALLIPOLI CASUALTIES.
HEAVIER THAN IN FRANCE
GENERAL' GODLEY'S STATEMENT
1 WTLLINGTON, July 27. ( "One cjmnot stir here without the chance of meeting a shrapnel or a sniper's bullet," wrote General Godley on June-2. "They talk of the casualties in Franco, but I do not fancy that at any time they have been anything like what they have been here in comparison to the numbers of men engaged. In my Division alone, which landed 8543 strong, I have had -J250 casualties, and t -tho\Australian Division's proportion", is, I believe, higher. But wemanage to keep going all right, and enjoy this delightful climate and oiir daily walks round the trenches as far as we can.
'.'These New, Zealanders and Aus-'trail'iaris-Have" fought.-.sp'lendfdly; and are never so happy as when they are going for the Turk with the bayonet. The Turks fight well, and it is the greatest mistake to underrate them, or not: to think that they are a pretty formidable enemy.' But I hope that, all the same, the Reinforcements coming may enable us soon to make a start for Constantinople."
