General Smuts estimated that tno rebellion and the operations in Damaralahd had cost £16,000,000. The casualty lists showed an almost identical number of English and Dutch names.
General Botha stated that he now knew that Maritz had communicated with the German Governor as early as 1913, and had received an encouraging reply. Telegrams from the Kaiser followed these negotiations. The natives under German rule had hailed the victory as a delivei'ance. General Botha expressed profound disgust with the German treatment of. natives and the little value attached to their lives.
