IN NEW ZEALAND

TREATMENT OF ALIENS

" A VERY WATCHFUL EYE."

STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER

AVELLINGTON, July 22

A question respecting the surveillance of aliens resident in New Zealand was put to the Prime Minister in the House this afternoon by Mr G. AY. Russell, lie asked whether the Government was keeping a. watchful eye on the enemy subjects in the Dominion. Two incidents, lie said, which had been'brought nnder his notice appeared to indicate that a closer watch was necessary. In one case a German in one of our cities had been referred to by his partner as practically wasting away to a shadow •beenns? he was afraid that the German* were going to be beaten. Ho (Mr Russell) doubted whether that was the kind of man who should be allowed to be nt large.

:■ Mr" Wilford: 'Perhaps ho is.suffering from.;" kultur." . '

Mr-Russell said that in the second r^se. which had occurred in another "H-.y. n. German had risked another resident whether there were any means of c-nmrmnicating with Germany. The bite1 * replied: "Yes, it is quite '.ijnnlp." A letter, he said, could be onsted to Switzerland, and ft would be r-.cnt direct to Germany. There w.ns. said, no trouble about it. On the man who made the enquiry expressing surprise at this answer, the man who 7ri!>dp the statement attempted to throw 'irivht upon it. apparently thinking that h" -h?.d .tono a little too far. If people of that kind were at largo, especially in nvr lending ports, it was time that ••loser ni+pntion wns given to the mattor of whether the number of people on Somes Island should not be increased.

The Prime Minister said that he was glad to be able to answer the question in the affirmative. A very watchful eye was being kept upon the enemy subjects resident in this country. A Commission had recently been appointed to deal with the question. Mr Wilforcl: Don't you know that there is a quicker way ?

Mr Massey said that wherever there, wore any suspicious circumstances in connection with any of these enemy subjects the attention of the Aliens Board" was directed to it and enquiries were made.

Mr Poole: AVhat about the men who put a brick through Fowlds's window vr Auckland ? He wanted to go on the island, but they would not let him

.'Mr Massey': He is probably quite safe p. way from the island.

Mr,Fletcher: 'What about Professor yon Zedlitz ? .

Mr'Massey said that a great deal more had been done in New Zealand in regard to aliens than either Parliament or tho, public were aware of. He would probably be able to make a fuller statement in a day or two. He would not answer the question about Professor yon Zedlitz at present, because it would probably be answered very shortly without him saying anything. Mr Russell observed that very often the neoplo who did nothing to excite suspicion were the most dangerous. The nii'n wno gave himself away wns probably nothing worse than a. fool, but the man who worked in the dark and said nothing required looking after.
