NAVAL OPERATIONS.

THE E 11's EXPLOITS

VISIT TO CONSTANTINOPLE

LONDON, June 28,

'A. member of the crew of submarine E 11, in a letter describing her 'rodent cruise, says:—"Wo bumped around the Sea of Marmora for a few days without sighting anything until the Sunday morning, when outside Constantinople ■\ve saw a big gunboat. We gave iher a 'tin fish' and she sank in iive ,'njin-ut-es. As she heeled sho opened ifire and hit our periscope. Wo sighted a steamer on Monday and slopped her. A Yankee correspondent aboard her, tried to bluff us, but we examined'her and found a 6-inch gun, several gun mountings, and a quantity of heavy gdn ammunition on board, so we blew her iip. After torpedoing two other steamers, we entered Constantinople on Tuesday, and fired two torpedoes, one of which sank: a transport and the other exploded ashore. On our return journey, after passing through the Narrows we rose to the surface and found a mine hanging over our bow. We chucked it off smartly"

A resident of Constantiople, describing the raid of the submarine E 12, say*:—

"Suddenly a razor blaze shot into tho harbour.' People began running hither and thithor. The soldiers in the transports fired their riflea into the water, while others jumped into the sea or on the quay. The submarine made a wide sweep and passed behind the transport Stamboul, whose crew jumped overboard. Tho shore batteries opened fire. The first shot struck the transport Stamboul, and the second hit a steamer with wounded soldiers on board, outside Seraglio Point. The submarine allowed the transport with wounded to proceed, but. torpedoed the others."
