FAMOUS FOOTBALLER KILLED

SYDNEY, June 29. . Private F. H. Thompson, who has been killed at the Dardanelles, was an mterna'tic-nnl Rugby Union player., and played against New Zealand last season. .

Mr C. Fowke has received word that his son, Trooper S. Fowke is sick in the Pont de Kubbah Hospital, Cairo.

Private William James Turton, whose name appeared in yesterday's casualty list, is the only son of Mr W. R. Turton, of Mount Somers ; He is 21 years of age, and he left New Zealand with the Third Reinforcements, but was afterwards transferred to the main body. His two sisters (Mrs C. Beckley and Mrs J. Rilcy) reside in Mount Somers. Advice received by Mr Turton reports that Private Turton has now been discharged from hospital.

Private S. Walters (Canterbury Battalion, wounded) is the youngest son of Mr J. Walters.-of Orari, and a brother of Mrs W. Garrard, of Ashburton. He is 24. years of age, and was educated at Gera-ldine. "After leaving school he followed the occupation of a motor chauffeur until enlisting with the main Expeditionary Force.

Chaplain-Captain H. L. Blaniires, writing from the base hospital at Cairo, says that the Rev. R. J. Sullivan, of Timaru (who is serving as a corporal in the Canterbury Battalion), had a very narrow escape when he was wounded at the Dardanelles. He was lying in a semi-conscious state after his wound had been hurriedly dressed, and ambulance workers had passed on to others. Opening his eyes, ho saw a big Turk, knife in hand, at his side. Fortunately he was taken for dead, and the Turk cut off his boots and clea red.
