MEETING OF ASHBURTON LADIES

WORK ■ ENTHUSIASTICALLY TAKEN UP.

Tho meeting convened by the Mayoress (Mrs ii. Galbraith) for the purposo of forming a branch of tho iled Cross Society in Ashburton was hold in the Borough Council Chambers on Saturday afternoon. Mrs GTalbraith presided over an attendance of about 150 ladiea.

In explaining the reason for which the meeting had been called, Mrs Galbraith said that- a Dominion movement had been started to provide a hospital ship for our men at the front, and the women's part was to provide the clothing and other equipment for the wounded men. The work was well in hand in other places,"and Ashburton had been asked to do its share. She knew that the ladies of Ashburton would not be backward.

Mrs Galbraith then read a letter from the Christchurch Branch 1 of the Society. It explained that each district had been asked to contribute a certain number of articles. Ashburton's share was as follows:—50 pairs blankets, 100 sheets, 100 pillow-cases, 50 bath towels, 25 , nigs, 100 hand towels, 100 face towels," 50 pyjamas, 50 bed jackets, 25 flannel dressing gowns, and 25 cotton dressing gowns.

The chairwoman further explained that these articles would be needed before June 10, so that a busy fortnight was ahead of them. After that, they would have to keep going to make the supply constant.

Mrs W. K. Watson suggested working as they had done before for the Patriotic Fund. This would do for the first fortnight at least.

It was suggested that the four church guilds might give up tho first fortnight entirely to Red Cross work, and it was finally decided to work two days a week for the next fortnight. Tuesdays and Fridays were appointed as the days, and St. Stephen's Schoolroom was fixed as the depot for obtaining the material so that the ladies could take it home and Avork on it there after the mating.

It was decided to have one cutterout for all the articles required, so that a universal pattern could be secured.

Grigg (Longbeach), Mesdames J. Cow and H. C. N. Watson (Tinwald), Mrs Corbett and Miss Shearer (Greenstreet), Mrs Moore (Winchmore), Mrs W. T. Lill (Willowbv), Mrs W. J. Dickie (Lyndhurst), Mrs W. J. Taylor (Ashton)., Mrs A. Amos (Wakanui); Mrs W. Morgan (Methven), Mrs D. Shaw (Lowcliffe), Mrs Hanson (Hinds), Mrs G. Murdoch (Mayneld); Mrs Doig (Chertsoy). It was decided to use the £60 still remaining from the Patriotic Fund for the benefit of tho hospital ship. Mesdames Galbraith, A. T. Emerson, E. Buchanan, John Findlay, and W. K. The following undertook the making of garments, etc.:—Mrs Dickie (Lyndhurst), 50 sheets nnd 50 pillow cases; St. Andrew's Guild, 50 sheets and 50 pillow cases; St. Stephen's Guild, pyjamas; Baring Square Guild, dressing gowns; Miss McDonnell, 25 dressing gowns; Mrs Cow (Tinwald), 12 suits pyjamas; Mrs Max Friedlander, 12 suits pyjamas; Mrs J. Grigg (Longbeach), 20 dressing gowns; Mrs Hansen (Hinds), six suits pyjamas; Mrs Taylor (Ashton), 12 bed jackets; Mrs Moore (Winchmoro) and Miss Shearer (Greenstreet), 12 bed jackets; Mrs Lill (Willowby), 60 nightingales; Mrs Amos (Wakaiiui), bed jacket; Mrs Evans, hemming of all towels; Mrs W. A.
