In March, at Nish, there were 20,000 sick from the army, including 15,000 cases of foyer, 8000' being typhus, also 8000 cases oi relapsing fever, and 1500 of enteric, Thc> conditions were appalling. The patkvnts were too many for the hospital. I*,1*, and doctors and nurses were dying, ilt one time 700 patients were lying in 200 beds, attended by two doctors. The arrangements were insanitary. There were no bathrooms, and typhoid sewage was discharging into the open ditch outside the ward. Rigid measures produced gradual improvement, and on April 18 the typhus cases had- been reduced to 948, and tho enteric to 1226.
