CARGO STEAMER TORPEDOED.
A HUGE SUBMARINE.
.LONDON, May 28. The submarine C 24 torpedoed and sank the Elder-Dempster steamer Ethiope near Land's End. The crew took to the boats. . One boat has been picked lip. . (Received May 31, 8.45 a.m.) LONDON,. May 30. It is stated that 16 of the Ethiopc's crew are still missing, but the captain j believes they have been picked up. Tbe Ethiope was proceeding down Channel, when those on board were surprised at a shot being fired across her bows. A submarine 300 feet long | appeared, and tie Ethiope attempted to escape, but two shells were ■ fired, and thel crew were given five minutes to get into the boats. The Ethiope was then torpedoed, and sank in five minutes. [The Ethiope was a cargo steamer of 3794 tons gross .register,-'-built in 1906, and owned by Messrs Elder, Dempster and Co., Ltd., of Liverpool, whose steamer Falaba was sunk in the same locality some weeks ago;]
